I'm thankful to not have the extra burden of working.

We had a fun trip to the pumpkin patch with Nana and Grampa and Great Grandpa. The kids keep picking bigger and bigger pumpkins each year. Thankfully they picked easy plans for carving as Brad and I end up doing most of the carving work. This year Brad said he has officially trained them well in scooping out the pumpkins so he doesn't have that job to do also. Honestly, carving pumpkins is my least favorite activity, but we do it for the kids. Thankfully Brad does most of it. What a great Daddy.
This year the kids wanted to trick or treat in our own neighborhood. So, we walked around for about 40 minutes which was Asher and Mia's limit and had such a fun time. They are the perfect age for trick or treating and I was really enjoying Asher's excitement after each house we stopped at. Afterward, Calvin wanted to take over the job of passing out candy. He's getting so big and I love his enthusiasm for that part of Halloween because it's my favorite part -- passing out candy.
She was initially going to have a fox themed party, but then the brothers swayed her to a dinosaur themed party, so that's what we went with. It ended up being a cute, fun party. Mia invited her classmates, so there were quite a few kids there. We made some carnival dinosaur themed games and I think the kids had fun with it. Here are some pics!

Dearest SweetPea,

It's hard to believe that today you are 11! It feels like we were just walking you around and around the kitchen island to keep you from fussing as a baby. Now you are 11!

You are such a sweet girl. You love helping and are always willing to share. You have one of the kindest hearts we know. We love you so much!

This year you started 4th grade! You are loving it. You also continue to ride horses at MARE and we work on a few other therapies with you. You love animals and if we could adopt a zoo, I think you would be in animal heaven. Maybe Mom and Dad can be brave enough to think of a furry type of animal for you...

Lately you have been into all things dinosaur, like your brothers. You are having a dino party tomorrow and we can't wait to have all your friends over. It is going to be a lot of fun!

There are many who continue to faithfully pray for you, SweetPea! This year, we've been praying for your seizures to go away and your back to be straighter. We will keep praying for those things, you are such a brave girl even with all of this other stuff going on.

We love you so much, Mia! Thank you God for giving us a sweet girl, who loves you and loves other. We are so blessed to have her in our family!

All our love,
The news was what we kind of anticipated, but we wanted to remain hopeful that the experts in the field might be able to do something different with Mia's special case. So, now we have some big decisions ahead of us. At what point do we absolutely need to do surgery for Mia's back? Is it better to wait or not to wait? How much of her back should be fused? I guess what is so heart wrenching for us at this point is knowing that if we do end up having surgery, the chances of further risk and degeneration of her back from the surgery are high. It's not really a matter of "if" the degeneration will happen, but "when"... and there are pain and problems with that which are just so discouraging to us to even think about. That in itself makes me want to hold off as long as possible, but correcting a smaller curve is easier than correcting a larger curve. If her back were to not change at all from this point forward, I think the doctors would agree that she would not need a surgery, but knowing scoliosis, that would be a miracle. So, please be praying with us and for us as we sort out everything. She's been riding there since Calvin was a baby--she had just turned 3 when she started riding. Her birthday is coming up, so we are nearing on 8 years of riding at MARE! When she first started riding, she rode a tiny horse named Sally. Her horse was about the size of those at pony rides that people take kids to when they are little. Now that she is older, she rides a huge horse - Haven. We love Haven. Haven is a sweet horse and does really well with Mia. Her riding instructor this year is the same instructor she had the first time she went to MARE. This instructor had left and is now back, so it is neat to see her again and for her to see how much Mia has changed. She is a great instructor, so we are excited for her to be back at MARE.
When Mia was born with all of her complications, Brad and I were naive to hospitals and doctors. We just assumed that everything would always work out and trusted the opinion of the doctor we saw. We never thought to question much of anything because they were the expert in the field. Now we are a bit older and hopefully a bit wiser, which makes everything more difficult. Now when we go about making decisions for Mia or the boys, or even us, we tend to get multiple opinions before making a decision. Mia has had scoliosis for awhile now and we've attempted a few different non surgical interventions with not much success. Now that she has had some growth spurts, her scoliosis has worsened and we are coming upon a point where we need to decide if surgical intervention is what she needs and when it should happen. It makes my mama heart heavy to think about another surgery for our daughter. She's older now and much more aware of things that happen and even though she is an extremely tough cookie, she does not like hospitals. I don't blame her either. So, we've gotten two opinions from doctors in California that both agree, her scoliosis needs a surgical intervention...the one thinks sooner rather than later. As I'm writing this, I just emailed her x-rays away to another set of doctors on the east coast for a third opinion. We will wait to hear from them and then move forward in figuring out what is best for Mia. Part of me wants to run away and hide under a blanket and just hope it figures itself out, but as parent, I can't do that. So, will you pray with us as we look to God for answers on timing and what our daughter needs. The thought of surgery seems so final and she is so young, so I need peace in waiting on God and trusting in Him for this. And of course Halloween is one of his favorite holidays, so he had to spend some of his birthday money on a T-Rex dinosaur that roars and has glowing eyes. It's almost 3 ft tall and has now become his buddy at home. We will see how long that lasts.
And Mia started swim lessons. She is over the moon happy with that. She might be part fish with how much she loves being in the water. The boys have been going since the start of summer, but we wanted to do private lessons for Mia with her seizures and since we had so much going on this summer, we waited until things settled down now. She's having a blast.

Brad and Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12928515504738939887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19065893.post-48078043247759219332018-08-23T14:35:00.001-07:002018-08-23T14:35:18.420-07:00A Healthy HeartYesterday we were off to LA again for another doctor appointment. This was a routine check up for Mia's heart. She was born with a heart defect that require surgery the first year of her life for repair, so having a heart check up will always be a part of her life. The fantastic news is that her heart is doing great. In fact, her cardiologist said that if he didn't know she had had surgery years ago, he's not sure he would be able to tell just by her echo that her heart had had a surgery...her heart looks that great and for that we are so pleased and happy.

After having multiple doctor appointments with news we weren't ready to here because you don't want your kid to have to go through all of this stuff, it was nice to have an appointment with good news.

Please continue to pray for Mia as she adjusts to a new seizure medicine. At this point, God continues to allow her seizures, even though we would rather have none, but we can always pray for Him to take away her seizures.

She has a minor tooth problem that we are hoping will resolve without difficult treatment...one of her adult teeth is not coming in the correct path and after a year of braces and expander treatment, it still doesn't want to drastically head the correct way, so prayers that the tooth would change direction would be appreciated!

And of course the other major issue we are dealing with is her scoliosis. We are getting another opinion soon, and would love for her not to have surgery, but prayers that her back would straighten and that we would have wisdom are also something we would be so grateful for. We serve a God of miracles and I am continually reminded of how far he has taken our sweet girl and healed her already, it's not beyond him to heal her now. We continue to lean in on Him and trust Him in his sovereignty.

Dearest Pumpkin,

Eight is great! I can't believe you are eight today. You woke up hoping to be taller than your sister, but you aren't quite there yet. We measured you in at 53 inches! Pretty soon you will be taller than her, but not quite yet!

You started second grade yesterday. You are a fantastic student. You love learning about science, especially dinosaurs. Sometimes you think you would like to be a paleontologist when you are bigger. We tell you to keep studying hard and you will be able to do anything you want. :) You are also an excellent reader and snarf books like your mama and daddy did when we were little. We learned this year that the library is our best friend for books after I bought you a stack of books and you read them in less than a week. One of your favorite book series is The Magic Tree House, so many exciting adventures in those books!

You are an animal lover. Spiders, sharks, whales, frogs, cats, dogs...I think if we lived in a zoo you would never leave home. You were hoping for a pet besides a fish for this birthday, but alas, all you have gotten so far is a lego spider.

This year you are learning to swim and mama is going to teach you piano. You will also be building lego robots at school and learning about exciting engineering things. We can't wait to see how much fun you have at school this year.

You love God and we couldn't be happier. We feel so blessed to have you in our family. You are our sweetest pumpkin. We love you!!!

Love,
Mom and Dad, brother and sister
This has been the most difficult year in a long time for us. I remember driving to UCLA when Mia was a baby multiple times a week and then as she got older and her health was more stable, there were less visits. We reached a point of only driving down there every few months. That was so nice. Then this past year, her seizures have returned and we can't seem to get them under control and because she's having some growth spurts, her scoliosis has worsened. It seems like combined with me trying to teach school, teach my own children, be a wife, be a mom, the extra doctor visits had just pushed me over my limit. I was barely making it. I look back and can see that it is only because of God's grace and care over me that I did make it.

Anyway, we decided as a family, that I need to cut some things out and so the first one to be cut was me teaching. After two years of part time work, I am back to being a full time mom. I'm thankful that we are able to do that because I know not all families are able to make that work. Since I am not working, only Mia will be staying at Legacy. The boys will be starting a homeschool program called Engineering for Kids. It's two days a week and they will be doing math/science stem projects at their program. They will learn some basic computer programming and since their teacher has a passion for art, they will also get some art lessons when they are there. Seems like a dream kind of school to me, especially for my math/science oriented boys. Then on their off days, they will be home with me and I will be teaching them all their other subjects. This is very similar to the Legacy schedule and we seemed to thrive with that, so I'm looking forward to tailoring their needs on their off days. Mia will also be at Legacy on the same two days that they are at the EFK's program, so that means that this mama will get two days to do her own appointments and even go to the grocery store alone!

As for Mia, we have had some different doctor consults about her scoliosis and we are going to send away to a few other doctors for one or two more opinions and we will go from there. Prayers for wisdom would be so appreciated with this! And prayers for a new medicine that we are about to start for her seizures would be welcomed also. Thankfully her seizures aren't debilitating at this point, but none the less, we would like zero seizures.

Look at how big these kids have gotten!
Dearest Calvin,

Today is your birthday! Today you are 7! It's hard to believe that the little baby we took home from the hospital is growing up into such a nice, young boy. You have a zest for life and learning and we love it! You are inquisitive about so many wonderful things and really enjoy learning about science topics, like dinosaurs, animals, and space.

Today is also Solar Eclipse day. The first Solar Eclipse that the United States has seen in many years. That's kind of neat that your birthday ended up being the day of the Solar Eclipse. We watched it live on the NASA streaming page and went outside and looked at crescent shadows on the ground. We watched the world turn a little bit darker in our town, but not completely because we weren't in the path of totality.

Saturday was your party, an ocean themed party. You had so many nice friends come for the party. It was a fun time and there are some pics of your cake (which was decorated partially by you) and the games played.

This year you start 1st grade and we are so excited for the things you will learn. We love you so much Sonshine!

All our love,
Mommy, Daddy, Mia and Asher
I remember when Mia was born and I sometimes updated the blog daily, if not every other day. I felt guilty for missing a day. I've missed six months! Just like that, in a blink of the eye.

What have we been up to? We finished our first year at Legacy with the kids. They had a great year and we are looking forward to another great year this coming fall. Mia will be in 3rd and Calvin will be in 1st. Asher has one more year at home, so he will be with Grandma Cheri while I teach a few hours each morning.

We've managed to do a few fun trips this summer. We spent a day at Morro Bay, a day up at the Sequoias and a day at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium. The kids are getting bigger and have been able to manage day trips much better. That works for us because it is a lot of work to pack up and get a hotel, if we can do a day trip, then we can be back home and in our beds which is perfect.

Jon, Carmen and the boys were here for about a month, so we've enjoyed quite a bit of family time with them. The kids were so sad when the cousins had to leave, they play so well together and love being with each other...we were all sad when it was time to say goodbye.

We've been doing a lot of driving to LA working on Mia's scoliosis with specific therapy. It reminds me of when she was little and I was driving to LA for so many doctor appointments. Thankfully, there are no babies to feed or fussiness...well, not a lot of fussiness ;) That makes it easier.

Mia continues to be seizure free. We've had a few incidents where she has made comments or acted differently that have put us on higher alert, but so far, she continues to be seizure free. Our prayer is that she would have another great year without any seizures! Praise God that she is doing so well.
Dearest Asher,

It's hard to believe that today you are 4! We remember the anticipation of your arrival and how excited we all were to be getting another baby boy. Out you came weighing 10 pounds 4 oz! You were a big baby. And you are still a big boy today, you weighed in this morning at 40 pounds (practically the same weight as your brother and sister now!). You are now 42 inches...taller than any other kid of ours at your age!

You love everything Lego these days. That makes Daddy very happy. It's amazing to watch you look at the Lego directions and figure out how they go. You are very good at building things.

And you love to sing. Right now, you are a humming your own tune while building a Lego. The perfect day, quite possibly!

Your favorite foods are pizza, macaroni & cheese, and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. You like most fruits and tolerate most vegetables. You'd rather have desert first, though. Who wouldn't?

These days, Mama is still your best friend, but you are developing a strong friendship with your brother and sister also...especially your brother. You want to do everything he does...except go to school. :)

We love you sweet boy and are just so blessed to have you in our family! We continue to love watching you grow and develop into who God created you to be.

Love, Always and Forever,
Mommy and Daddy...

Dearest Mia,

We can't believe that you are 9 today! This is your last year of being a single digit! That just can't seem possible, but it is. This year you sprouted up another 3 inches! We couldn't be happier that you keep thriving. Calvin and Asher are going to have to eat more vegetables to keep up with you!

Since May of this year, you have been seizure free. We are so grateful for each day that God grants you without a seizure. We continue to pray that God will keep you seizure free and hope we never have another one again.

This year we started a new school and you've adapted and embraced this new school. You've always loved learning and you continue to enjoy school. You have such a nice, caring class and we are excited to see your new friendships blossom and grow.

You keep doing various activities. You love riding horses at MARE and you especially love going to AWANA. It's neat to see you take a verse and apply it to your life.

We can't wait to see what year 9 holds for you. We trust God completely for His plans for your life. We are just so grateful that He chose us to parent you. We love you sweet pea!!!

Love Always,

Dearest Calvin!

We can't believe you are six! You've grown into such a nice, helpful, young boy. We love you so much. You sprouted three inches this past year and have hit the big 4-1 in weight! As you can imagine, you are a tall, lanky boy...just like your dad was at your age.

This year you are starting Kindergarten and we are so excited for you. You know so much already, but being in a class of kids that are your age will be so much fun for you.

You and Daddy went on your first mission trip with our church this past June. You had a great time and want to do that again. We love watching you develop a heart for helping others.

You love God more than us and that makes us very happy. Things are very black and white to you, we love watching you ask questions about your faith and making it more real for you.

We pray that God would continue to mold you into the man he would want you to be. We pray that you would fiercely love God and want to serve him always.

We love you sweet boy, our sonshine!

Love always,
Family came over and a few of his friends came over and we had a nice, small party for him. He has been obsessed with Pokemon since the new Pokemon Go app and so that is what his party was all about. It was a big hit. All the kids had fun and of course, the birthday boy learned more things about Pokemon then he had ever known before...we may have created our own little pocket monster. Here are a few pics of the day.
The kids and I have been just relaxing at home, not really doing anything. It's hot outside, so we try not to be out there in the afternoon. I have a million things on my to do list and absolutely no motivation to do any of them.

Thankfully my kids don't realize that other kids do a lot more things during the summer. They are perfectly content to hang out with mama all day and color and paint.

We do have a tiny trip planned at the end of the month to Monterey. The kids have been asking to go to the aquarium and we thought we could go for a couple days. Brad will be finished with his class he is taking at the local community college and it will be a nice end to his hard work.

Mia continues to be seizure free and we continue to praise God. We have slowly started weaning one of her meds and will continue to slowly do this for awhile. Our prayer is that she would remain seizure free without the third medicine, but it's going to take us quite awhile to wean. Thank you for continuing to pray for her!Brad and Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12928515504738939887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19065893.post-62284804438970084212016-06-28T21:04:00.000-07:002016-06-28T21:04:04.524-07:00A Much Needed UpdateIs it summer yet? As of today, I can officially say it is. June tends to be a bit more chaotic because for the last two years I have been co-director of crafts at our church's VBS. It's a fun job, but can be exhausting too. Thankfully my co-director is AWESOME and I couldn't do it without her. But, it just seems like everything revolves around making that happen in June.

The kids had a blast at VBS. It was just a great week for them and I love how excited they were about going. We've listened to the music CD of VBS songs on repeat for the last month, so I was rather surprised when it came on in the car today and everyone still got excited. Asher said, "this is my favorite."

The kids have been doing swim lessons every day and I'm excited to report that both Calvin and Asher can swim! How crazy is that? Their teacher has them jumping in or sliding in and then swimming to the side on their own. Neither of them can swim the length of the pool, and Calvin can definitely swim further than Asher, but I'm so impressed with how much they have improved. Mia is right there too and while she readily tries and works on all the skills, she just has a tougher time getting it all together than the boys. But, I think with enough practice, she too will get it.

Speaking of Mia, she continues to be seizure free! Praise God! We have started to wean her off one of her meds very slowly. We are being cautious, but realize also that she's probably on a bit too much medication as she gets really sleepy during the afternoon. She is also completely healed from her surgery and doing really well.

We are looking forward to relaxing over the next few weeks as we enjoy our first days of summer!Brad and Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12928515504738939887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19065893.post-23072684013128757692016-06-03T21:59:00.001-07:002016-06-03T21:59:38.427-07:00Home!We made it home late on Thursday evening. It was so nice to be able to fly home and not drive especially since we ended up staying longer than I anticipated.

Mia is doing really well. It always amazes me how quickly kids bounce back after surgery.

Before her surgery date, we had to meet with several specialties to get her cleared for surgery because of her complicated history. One of those was neurology because of her ongoing seizures. They recommended that we increase one of her meds just a little bit to bridge us through surgery since the body is prone to more seizures during a surgery and recovery. So the Tuesday before surgery, we increased the one med just a tiny bit for her AM dose. Up through her surgery, she was still having daily seizures. The day after her surgery she had 3 seizures. But then, amazingly, they stopped. We haven't had a seizure since last week Saturday. There have been a few times when she zones and I wonder if it is an absence seizure, but they are very brief and it could just be exhaustion and recovery from her surgery. We are hopeful that in the next few weeks we can determine, as she gets rested, if she indeed is seizure free. Right now, we are just so grateful. Every day without a seizure is a blessing. Thank you, thank you, thank you God!!!Brad and Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12928515504738939887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19065893.post-78847675834949018122016-05-28T06:09:00.001-07:002016-05-28T06:09:42.332-07:00RecoveryOverall Mia had been doing really well with recovery. We've had a few hiccups with her IV's. Her veins are very tiny and fragile, so she keeps losing her IV's and it's very hard for the nurses to find a new vein. Last night it took 7 tries to replace her IV and her left hand, where the IV failed, swelled up like a pufferfish. It's still a little swollen today, hoping there is no damage to the tissue. They ended up injecting her 5 times with a medicine called Wydase, which is supposed to counteract and protect the tissue as it returns to normal.

Today the goal is to start liquids and walk some more. Hopefully also get off the extra nasal oxygen completely. Some of the time she does good, but then sometimes her blood oxygen levels dip down, especially when she is super relaxed and sleeping. But, she hates the nasal oxygen and is constantly taking it off, I ended up sleeping with her and holding her hands so she couldn't tear it off.

Grandma, Daddy and Asher started driving home yesterday (change of plans) and now Mia and I will fly home when we are done. Hoping that is less stressful on her travel wise.

Thanks for praying!Brad and Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12928515504738939887noreply@blogger.com0
