Out of surgery

We just heard from the doctor, everything went well and Mia is on to the recovery room. We should get to see her in a little bit.

Surgery Started

We just left Mia, she went under anesthesia really easily. Pray for everyone involved, we will update when we know more.

We met Mia's doctor today. We like her and are happy with her thoughts on the procedure. She said a CT scan isn't really necessary for this because you get a better picture of whether or not it is soft or boney tissue once you are actually in the nose. She said a possibility is that her nose might just need a tiny bit of tissue removed while dilating it to reopen the nostril, which would be great because it is less intrusive than removing more tissue. She will know tomorrow. Please pray for the doctors and all those involved in her surgery tomorrow. Please also pray for a quick an easy recovery and that we would not need to do this again. Praise God for how far He has taken Mia already.

San Francisco

We made it to San Francisco yesterday evening. We got settled in our hotel and walked around fisherman's wharf a bit. We also found a grocery store close by and picked up a few things for the kids. Our appointment is at 11:15 today, so we will post an update on how that goes. The kids are doing great, Mia would like to ride on a bus...we might have to try the trolley.

Packing

I don't think much more will fit. What do you think?

I spoke with the pre-op team yesterday. It was nice to be able to go over an extensive history with them and all of this information will be given to the anesthesiologist. Her scheduled surgery time is Tuesday at 7:30 and we need to be there at 6:30. That's so different than UCLA where they always ask us to be there hours before surgery and then we twiddle our thumbs and attempt to entertain an awake child. This is really nice. They told me that she is scheduled to stay overnight so that they can observe her, which I didn't realize, but am happy with because I think that's a smart choice. So, hopefully we'll be discharged Wednesday and able to come back home. Thanks for praying.

Mia's Story

Mia was born October 12th, 2007. Lisa's water broke early at 34 weeks and she was in the hospital for 2 weeks because she didn't go into labor. During that time, they noticed a blocked intestine in Mia and determined that she should be delivered down at UCLA. So, at 36 weeks, Mia was delivered via C-section (because she was breech). We know that was a God thing because after she was born we found out her heart had not completed closing off the four chambers (an AV Canal) and a stressful delivery might not have been best for her. We also found out she didn't have an anal opening and her right nostril was blocked. Months later we would find out her skull had fused early. All of these things required surgeries. On May 1st, 2008, Mia had surgery on her skull and suffered a stroke during it. The doctors told us she would only "eat, breath, smile and laugh". People from all over had already been praying for Mia, but so many more joined in and she is truly a miracle because she continues to progress far beyond what anyone would have imagined. This is our blog to document that journey of our little girl, thank you for praying and we hope it will encourage you as much as it encourages us. God is good, all the time!
