One More Thing????

We got Mia's blood work back today and she tested positive for Celiac disease. There are 5 areas they look, and she only tested positive in 1, so the doctor said it was mild, but still there. So, our next plan of action is to cut out all gluten over the next 3-6 months and see if that makes a difference. I was a bit overwhelmed driving home and thinking about what that would look like, but after talking with Nana (Brad's mom), I feel much more at ease because it is so much easier to be gluten free these days than when her mother was diagnosed with this years ago. And there is so much more information out there too. Gluten intolerance and a Lactose intolerance go side by side, but at the moment we are just going to cut out gluten, we'll look at other things later on, if need be. I'd love for these changes to help her bowel movements and even her skin rashes (which is common with a gluten intolerance). We'll see, only time will tell.

How coincidental is this? We were talking about gluten and casein intolerance today at lunch. One of the docs said that casein is very hard for the body to metabolize and the byproduct of casein is basically an opiate. This causes the body to basically become dependent on casein and eventually ends up becoming sensitive to it. I really hope that going gluten-free helps Mia. I does sound daunting, but there are so many options available now. Once you get in to it, it'll become second nature. Good luck!

There are tons of gluten free options, especially for kids.

I have talked to many many Peds GI's because Celiac disease is really, really common in CF, so common that we look for it regularly in Becca. They have ALL said Celiac disease can not be diagnosed reliably in kids under 5 with just blood tests. The blood tests under 5 are frequently wrong.
